BICA에서는 2021년 6월 부터 탈북 고등학생 대학생들의 무료 영어 튜터링 사역을 시작하였습니다. 탈북자는 북한에서 출생하여 성장하다가 북탈출하여 남한에 정착한 사람들입니다. 이들은 북한과 남한의 언어와 문화를 이해하고 있으며, 통일 시대의 주역이 될 사람들입니다. 한편, 탈북 청소년과 청년들은 북한에서 영어 교육 기회가 적었기 때문에, 남한의 정착 및 교육과정에서 어려운 부분중 하나가 영어학습입니다. 탈북출신 청소년 학생들의 학업중단은 일반 남한의 학생들 3배이며, 대학 중단도 현저히 높습니다. BICA의 봉사자들은 이들의 남판에서 학업을 이어가는 데 돕고자 합니다.
한학기 평균 8-10명의 학생들과, 10-12 명의 봉사자들이 Zoom으로 만나고 있습니다. 봉사자들은 텍사스에 거주하는 다양한 인종의 성인들과 한인교포 고등학생들입니다.
From June 2021, BICA started a free English tutoring ministry for North Korean defector high school and college students. North Korean refugees are people who were born and raised in North Korea but escaped and has settled in South Korea. They are South Korean citizens now. They understand the language and culture of both North and South Korea, and will be the main players in the reunification era. On the other hand, they have few opportunities for English education in North Korea, so learning English is a difficult part in their settlement. North Korean teen's school drop out of school at three times the rate of S.Korea born students, and college dropouts are also significantly higher.
BICA's volunteer tutors are helping them to continue their education and pursue their dream. Volunteers meet with an average of 10-12 students per semester via Zoom. Volunteers are ethnically diverse adults and Korean American high school students living in Texas.
